The value of routine

Every morning, my children wake up by 6:30, my husband leaves for work shortly after, and my kids get some time to relax and have "quiet time" before we start our day's lessons.

For us, this means that my youngest gets to watch a movie he likes or play on the iPad, while my older son reads, plays a video game, or listens to music. We also eat breakfast during this time, take showers, and get dressed.

Occasionally, I'll drive my husband to work, we'll have an early morning errand to run, or some other factor disrupts our morning routine, and my kids feel it the rest of the day. For little ones, having a sort of routine, especially in the morning and at bed time, is incredibly valuable. This is why kids tend to settle down for bed easier (usually!) after a bedtime story, a tuck-in, and a prayer.

We don't wake our children up. Being home schooled, they get to sleep in as late as they need, but my children have always been naturally early risers. Some home school families begin lessons promptly at 8:00, while others let their children have free play in the mornings before starting lessons. You can try either way and then decide what works best for your family and for your kids at this point in their lives.

What are some routines that your family has?
